UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves Celebrates Halloween with a Title Update and a Double Cash Weekend

The next time you start up UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves you will be required to download an update to the game (Japan and Asia regions — your update will be available next week).
Here’s the list of (most of) the changes we made. Some changes have been withheld to protect the innocent.
  • Addressed respawn points when the artifact goes out of bounds in the Plunder gametype
  • Dynamically adjust the win condition for fewer players during the course of a match
  • Added features to deter players from voluntarily leaving during a match
  • Added rate limit to “When a Chapter is Completed” Twitter event
  • Fixed a display issue during letterboxing
  • Fixed Danish Trophy description
  • Fixed screenshot utility in standard definition resolutions
  • Fixed the “Players Met” list not displaying recent players
  • Addressed a variety of Multiplayer connectivity issues
BUT, that’s not all…
With Halloween on the horizon, we wanted to take this spooky occasion to announce that this weekend is also our first ever Double Cash Weekend in UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves. The Double Cash Weekend starts on Friday, October 30, 2009, at 11:00 AM PST and continues until Monday, November 2, 2009, at 11:00 AM PST.
In every match during Double Cash Weekend, you’ll be getting twice the Cash award you normally would for completing typical game actions – not medal-related currency awards – giving everyone a leg up in increasing their Rank for a limited time. That means this weekend is the perfect time to hop on to our Competitive and Co-op Multiplayer modes – whether you’re just a few levels away from the vaunted ‘X’ or this is just your first time online.
A bunch of Naughty Dogs will also be playing this weekend, so be on the lookout for the red Naughty Dog paw next to our PSN ID in the game and feel free to say hi, ask any questions or shoot at our characters. Stay sharp! There might be something spooky around the next corner…

Award-Winning Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Debuts Exclusively on the PlayStation 3

Naughty Dog's genre defining action shooter demonstrates power of PS3 mixing story telling and gameplay to provide the adventure of a lifetime.

FOSTER CITY, Calif. - Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) announced today the North American launch of UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves exclusively for the PlayStation 3 (PS3). Developed by Naughty Dog Inc., the acclaimed development team that produced UNCHARTED: Drake's Fortune for PS3 and the Jak & Daxter franchise for PlayStation 2, UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves blends together the art of cinema and gaming to bring players a level of realism never before seen on a game console. With an extensive, story-driven single-player mode and thrilling competitive multiplayer and cooperative modes, UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves demonstrates Hollywood blockbuster moments of roller coaster tension and exhilarating action through environments and characters brought to life by the most advanced graphics currently available on the PS3 system.

UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves picks up the story of Nathan Drake, a fortune hunter with a shady reputation and an even shadier past who is lured back into the treacherous world of thieves and mercenary treasure-seekers. In this adventure, Drake embarks on a journey that will push him to his physical, emotional, and intellectual limits as he seeks to discover the truth behind the lost fleet of Marco Polo and the mythical Himalayan valley of Shambhala, and ultimately recover the legendary Cintamani Stone. Along the way Drake encounters a rogue paramilitary leader and fugitive war criminal who's seeking the treasure for his own nefarious purposes. Accompanied on this quest by allies both old and new, Drake is forced to confront crises of loyalty and betrayal within an underworld of smugglers and thieves.

"Since the first game play demonstration shown at E3 2009, UNCHARTED 2 has remained one of the most award winning and anticipated title launches for 2009," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President, Product Marketing, SCEA. "What sets the game apart from anything else on the market is that Naughty Dog has not only been able to deliver on the spectacle, they have infused it with meaning and emotion by telling a story that is so character driven it sets a new bar for the video game industry and is a technical masterpiece that truly demonstrates the capabilities of the PS3."

The Naughty Dog 2.0 engine provides UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves with an open design, which allows players to take an aggressive or stealth approach to combat. While in combat Drake can jump across gaps in buildings during a rooftop fight, or drop off of a ledge to use the building as protection, opening up the opportunity for players to use the environment itself as a cover. In addition, free-flowing traversal gunplay adds a unique vertical element to familiar cover-based third-person shooting mechanics, allowing the player to engage in combat from any position in the environment - even while climbing or hanging. The environment also serves to challenge the player to interact with moving set pieces. Players will find themselves fighting through collapsing buildings, or battling enemies on a train taking sharp turns and moving around obstacles.

UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves holds a variety of visually stunning environments from lush, green swamps and dense urban environments, all the way to trains, rooftops and the ice and snow of the Himalayas. In these environments, players will experience dramatic in-game events that make them an active participant in the cinematic experience. With combat at the core, players will experience gunplay and varied combat enhancements, including an expanded melee system, and a variety of enemy types with advanced AI routines. The journey is balanced with the addition of puzzles that include climbing, exploration, and the need for careful observation.

"This game just couldn't have been made on any other system; the Blu-ray is maxed and the entire game is played without loading thanks to the Hard Disc Drive," said Christophe Balestra, co-president, Naughty Dog. "Naughty Dog is known for pushing hardware; this is the most ambitious game we have ever made and the game PS3 owners have been waiting for."

The sheer amount of detail in UNCHARTED 2 sets an industry standard and is an achievement that only PS3 can provide. The Naughty Dog 2.0 engine creates a milestone in technology innovation by recreating reality and capturing human emotion and gives the game flawless visuals, life-like environments, seamless cut scenes, and no visible loading - a Naughty Dog hallmark. Complete with studio-scale effects, including 7.1-surround sound audio that rivals Hollywood's biggest blockbuster films, cutting-edge artificial intelligence, voice and motion capture, UNCHARTED 2 delivers the ultimate next generation game play experience.

Competitive Multiplayer and Cooperative Modes
In addition to the addicting single-player action, UNCHARTED 2 offers robust cooperative and online multiplayer modes that bring the graphical quality of single-player with a wide variety of gameplay options. Competitive multiplayer supports up to 10 players, and offers a wide selection of match types from Deathmatch to Gold Rush across 7 different maps. Utilizing a robust party system, groups of players will remain together in ranked and custom matches while earning currency, which used in combination with currency earned in single player missions, will unlock additional content and upgrades. The competitive multiplayer also includes Cinema and Machinima modes that enable gamers to automatically record gameplay data for any match in any map and game type. Players can then head into Cinema to watch the recorded matches and then replays, screenshots and footage that can be made into videos in Machinima mode. Cooperative mode allows gamers 3 distinct scenarios for up 3 players to progress through a variety of environments by working together to accomplish set objectives.

The independent Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rates UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves "T" for "TEEN" (Descriptors: Blood, Language, Suggestive Themes, Violence). For more information about the ESRB, visit www.esrb.org.

Uncharted 2 Multiplayer Demo open to all today

All of us at Naughty Dog are thrilled to announce that the Multiplayer Demo for UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves will be available for everyone to download on the PlayStation Store today at 11:00 AM.
If you haven’t had the chance to experience the Multiplayer Demo over the past few weeks, or read much about it, IGN has a great overview they posted of just how much we packed into just under 1.3 GB. In short, the Multiplayer Demo includes four maps, four competitive modes and two co-op modes. That’s two new maps, two new competitive modes and one more co-op mode than our June Multiplayer Beta.

However, throwing in Cinema, the Machinima mode and the special Stage map was one of the things were most looking forward to putting in your hands. UNCHARTED 2 automatically records the gameplay data for your competitive multiplayer matches in any map and gametype. You can then head into Cinema to watch your recorded matches and that’s where the good stuff is – from watching your own replays, taking your own screenshots, making your own videos or even using the Machinima game mode and Stage map to create your own videos.
We invited Machinima.com to come by Naughty Dog a little while back and they walked away with a pretty good overview of our Cinema and Machinima tools in this video.
We look forward to seeing all of your screenshots and video creations throughout the course of this Demo, and of course, when UNCHARTED 2 launches on October 13.

UNCHARTED 2 First Online Reviews

Things are picking up steam for us as we head into the final weeks before UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves releases worldwide in October. It’s hard to believe that just nine months ago, we announced UNCHARTED 2 with our “Cliffhanger” trailer at the 2008 SPIKE Video Game Awards. We took the next few months to slowly tease out more information on our single-player campaign until we dropped the bomb in late April that we were including multiplayer gameplay modes in UNCHARTED 2. Everyone at Naughty Dog worked exceptionally hard to get those modes ready to provide everyone with a small preview of what we were up to when we launched our Multiplayer Beta during E3 2009. Not only did we feel great that everyone was finally getting some hands-on time with UNCHARTED 2 multiplayer, but we were equally stoked to end E3 2009 with over 20 awards, including 6 “Best in Show” awards.

Since then, we’ve spent all our time putting the finishing touches on the game and we were able to recently announce that UNCHARTED 2 had gone gold. Since then, we’ve been eagerly waiting to see what game critics have thought about our game and we’re just now starting to see the reviews come in. Earlier this week, we were absolutely thrilled to see our first review garnering a 5 out of 5 and Editors’ Choice Award in the November 2009 issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine. Then, today, we received two more reviews – IGN had the exclusive review and gave UNCHARTED 2 a 9.5 out of 10 and GamesRadar UK chimed in with another perfect 10 out of 10. Needless to say, we can’t wait to read the rest of the reviews over the next few weeks!
Don’t forget that just because we release on October 13, 2009, doesn’t mean you can’t get some hands on time with UNCHARTED 2 before we launch – our Multiplayer Demo will be available to everyone via PlayStation Network on September 29 or, if you pre-order a copy at GameStop now, you can jump in today!
If you do play the Multiplayer Demo, keep a sharp eye out as you’re playing anytime over the next four weeks – a bunch of Naughty Dogs will be playing with you! You can spot us by the red paw next to our PlayStation Network ID in Multiplayer matches and some of us will also be using unique Naughty Dog character skins – Nathan Drake and a pirate from UNCHARTED: Drake’s Fortune, both wearing a Naughty Dog shirt.

First UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves Review — PlayStation: The Official Magazine

We’re less than a month out from the launch of UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves and we’re starting to see reviews come in. We just received the November issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine in the studio which has the first world review of UNCHARTED 2. Subscribers should have this issue in the mail any time now and, if you don’t have a subscription, you can pick up a copy from newsstands in the next couple of weeks.
Cracking open the issue, which features UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves as its cover, we were totally thrilled to see that our game received a perfect 5/5 AND the Editors’ Choice award for the month! We’ve been working incredibly hard over the past two years to make UNCHARTED 2 the best game we’ve made yet and we’re all smiles to hear that we’re not the only ones who think we’ve got something really great on our hands.
You’ll have to pick up your own copy to read the ten full pages of UNCHARTED 2 details, but in the meantime here’s an image of the cover to serve as a preview:
I’m pretty sure just reading reviews of our game won’t be enough to hold you over until we launch on October 13, so be sure to check out our Multiplayer Demo. If you pre-ordered UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves through GameStop, then your early access to the demo starts tomorrow and runs up until just prior to the launch of our game. If you haven’t pre-ordered, the Multiplayer Demo opens up to everyone via a PlayStation Network download on September 29.
We’ll be back on the PlayStation.Blog tomorrow with more details about the multiplayer demo and an associated contest you’ll definitely want to know about!

Epic Qore Episode 16 – Featuring UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves, Gran Turismo with Jay Leno, PSPgo and Brutal Legend

This is an epic episode of Qore. Simply one of the best.
UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves, the most highly-awarded game of E3 2009, is our focus this month, and we’ve got in-depth and exclusive coverage – Veronica Belmont goes behind-the-scenes of picturesque Skywalker Ranch to witness the final soundtrack recording session with composer Greg Edmonson and sits down with Naughty Dog Creative Director Amy Hennig to discuss her devoted and innovative approach to this sequel. We also dive deep into the technology that brings this world to life.
Gran Turismo is coming to the PSP on October 1, and players will immediately recognize the distinct voice of Jay Leno in the game’s introduction. Correspondent Audrey Cleo meets the late night legend for an exclusive Qore interview from his world famous garage. From his first ’55 Buick Roadmaster to the ’09 Corvette ZR1, don’t miss this look a Jay’s amazing collection.
Veronica also takes the new PSPgo out for a test drive into the real world before exploring the heavy metal inspiration of Double Fine’s Tim Schaefer, creator of the epic rock and roll adventure game Brutal Legend.
Finally, you asked for it, and we’ve got it! Qore annual subscribers are invited to the MAGPublic Beta scheduled to start on September 17. All current subscribers will be sent voucher codes for the MAG Beta test coming later this month.
Here are the specifics:
  • If you are not a current subscriber, you can still get in on the Beta if you subscribe or renew on or before September 17.
  • The MAG Beta is open to subscribers only, not to single episode purchasers.
  • All Beta invitations are restricted to persons 18 years and older.
  • We must have your current, valid e-mail address on file.
  • You must be opted in to receiving communications from PlayStation.
  • Vouchers will be sent to the e-mail associated with the PSN account that purchased the Qore subscription, not to any sub-accounts.
You can update your e-mail address and check your notification preferences via your profile on PS.com or on the PS3 itself under Account Management Information. Be sure that you have “opted in” to receive our communications.
Like I said, this September episode is epic:

  • Jay Leno and Gran Turismo PSP
  • Our PSPgo update
  •  with Tim Schaefer
  • MAG Beta invitation
  • UNCHARTED 2 theme
  • DiRT2 demo
